crowns of privilege
I found myself quietly raging with resentment as brave women were coming forward in vast numbers demanding justice for the sexual violence they had experienced. Women were turning the shift of silence into one of action. I became hopeful and empowered, but as time past, I witnessed individuals and groups denying, justifying, and all together avoiding the issues. I felt they were not holding themselves accountable, not acknowledgement that our culture supports sexual violence and those who perpetuate the behavior.
As I tried to digest the fury, I realized this is what my neighbors of color have been demanding for centuries, acknowledgment that we live within systems that supports violence towards people of color.
Crowns of Privilege is the acknowledgement of my white privilege, an act of facing my biases and examining behaviors and language that need to change in order to be an ally. To acknowledge the harm, so as to not perpetuate the damage. To remain accountable.
